      'But how must it be sent?'
       'Pugh! when you please, it's done with ease,
      Master, be you content.  
     'I'll stick it on my arrow's head,
      And shoot it into the town;
       The mark shall show where it must go,
      When ever it lights down.'  
     The project it was full performed;
      The sheriff that letter had;
       Which when he read, he scratchd his head,
      And rav'd like one that's mad.  
     So we'll leave him chafing in his grease,
      Which will do him no good;
       Now, my friends, attend, and hear the end

Como la diana estaba algo lejos del alcance de la flecha, con presteza hizo avanzar el caballo mar adentro hasta ver que el agua bañaba el vientre del caballo. Era el día dieciocho del tercer mes, en el primer cuarto de la hora del gallo, y en ese momento soplaba violento viento del norte. El barco era pequeño y las olas se levantaban altas. Se veía que el barco subía y bajaba entre las olas y el abanico no quedaba fijo. Entonces Yoichi cerró los ojos y oró en su interior, pidiendo: "Salve al gran Buda de Hachiman y al Gran Dios Aizen de Nasu. No hagáis que se desvíe la flecha." Y al abrir bien los ojos vio que amainaba algo el viento y parecía que el abanico ofrecía un blanco fácil. Yoichi, aunque guerrero de corta estatura, tensó con fuerza su gran arco de doce soku y tres fuse y disparó, rauda la flecha. La flecha, sin errar, golpeó fuertemente el abanico más o menos a un sun hacia arriba del clavillo. Mientras la flecha con kabura cayó al mar, el abanico voló hacia el cielo y después de dar unas vueltas en el vacío agitado por el viento primaveral, se sumergió rápidamente en el agua.

La segunda flecha

GESSLER.- ¡Oye, Tell!
TELL (Volviendo atrás).- ¿Qué mandáis, señor?
GESSLER.- Ocultaste una flecha en tu pecho... Si, si; lo vi bien... ¿Con qué objeto?
TELL.- (Confuso).- Señor, es costumbre usada por los ballesteros.
GESSLER.- No, Tell, no es verdad. Otro ha sido tu objeto. Dime la verdad, libre y francamente, Tell. Sea lo que fuere, te garantizo la vida.. ¿Para qué esa segunda flecha?
TELL.- Bien, señor; puesto que me aseguráis la vida, os diré toda la verdad. (Saca la flecha del seno, y lanza al Gobernador una mirada terrible.) Con esta segunda flecha hubiera atravesado... a vos, si hiriese antes a mi hijo querido, y la vuestra... de seguro no hubiese errado el blanco.
